There are loads of fun events planned for children at the 2009 Cape Town Book Fair.

The Cape Town Book Fair is scheduled for 12-14 June 2009. As usual there are loads of fun things to keep children busy in the Kidzone while parents visit the over 250 displays in the main hall.

Favourite Books for Kids

Storyteller Gilly Southwood will be telling kids about an awful visit to Restaurant LePosh with Horrid Henry, and Sindiwe Magona will read from her famous story, The Best Meal Ever. Tracy Going will introduce the star of her new book, Chef Hippo.

Children’s Books about Music

Children who love music are in luck. Artist and musician,Tyrone Appollis will read his new story, The Silver Saxophone, and another famous musician, jazz singer Bettina Schouw will read her book Tina’s Song. A drumming workshop will teach kids how to beat out rhythms to stories.

Children’s Authors

Some of South Africa’s favourite children’s writers will be at Kidzone too. Listen to Reviva Schermbrukker reading from the book she wrote about her car, The Red Skedonk.

Top illustrator Alzette Prins will be showing children her new book, The Sun, The Moon & The Blanket of the Night, a gentle story that shows there is a special time and place for everything in the world. Everyone’s favourite author, illustrator and storyteller, Niki Daly will be reading his deliciously scary stories from Creepy Street as well as launching his new chapter book, Betina Valentino.

Books about Animals

There’s lots to occupy children who love the outdoors. At the Famous Five slot, scouts will be teaching kids how to tie the tightest knots.

Famous cartoonist Tony Grogan will draw the pictures while Irma Chait reads from her book African Animal Pop Idol Show.

Everyone is invited to the launch of Serengeti Safari, part of the series called Animal Adventures in Africa, which teaches kids about wildlife, the environment and conservation.

Activities for Younger Children

There’s lots for small children to do too. They can listen to The Gruffalo, watch a puppet show and meet their favourite characters, Spot the dog and Peter Rabbit.

A display of educational wooden toys will keep them busy, and parents can learn about how important it is to read to young children.

If all the talks, book launches and workshops aren’t enough, the Kidz Zone has fun activities planned, like a fairy party for the under 8s, and a pirate showdown at the Jolly Roger Pirate Ship.

Spiderman will be handing out free comics, kids can play Where’s Wally and everyone is invited to help build a monster sized Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Prizes and Giveaways

Hampers of Children’s books and laptops can be won every day in the Kidz Zone, and there will be displays of books to buy. What better way to introduce children to the joy and fun of reading?

The Cape Town Book Fair will be held at the Cape Town Convention Centre from 13 - 16 June, and entry for kids is free. Phone 27 (0) 21 4185493 or visit the website for the full program.
