Adding a bit of fun and surprise to book reading is a sure way to grab a child's attention.
A few years ago, when I started reading the Grimm fairy tales to my children, I decided to make our story reading time a little extra special. I knitted my daughter a pair of flower elf slippers and my son a pair of bell elf slippers. Together, we would curl up on the sofa, both children wearing their little elf slippers, and read the tales of Brothers Grimm. Here is the slipper pattern that I used. The foot length is 6.5 inches and stretches to 7.5 inches. The slipper can be finished off with a knit or crocheted flower, a bell, or pompon. Materials: worsted weight yarn, pair of size 8 US knitting needles, tapestry needle. Cast on 30 sts. Knit every row until you have an equal-side square. Bind off. Knit two squares for one pair of slippers. To make the slippers, bring opposite corners together (triangle shape). Use tapestry needle and yarn to sew along one entire side (bottom of foot). Continue to sew around the corner (heel) and halfway up the side (back of slipper). Tie off. Fold down front flap of the slipper and attach a flower, bell, or pompon to it to hold the flap down permanently. Sew toe corner up so that the slipper has a curl in it like an elf shoe. Make second slipper in the same manner. Once you've made these adorable slippers, find the perfect little elf (or fairy for fairy slippers) book at your local bookstore or library, and surprise your little one with two gifts of love.
