These books about fairies with a twist are sure to delight primary school-aged girls looking for fun but challenging chapter books to read.

Girls looking to graduate from the sweetness of the lovely Rainbow Magic and Magic Ballerina series will be delighted by Elly, the central character in Meredith Badger’s Fairy School Drop-Out series (Hardie Grant Egmont). Where Elly goes, trouble seems to follow in a most un-fairylike way.

Fairy School Drop-Out

On the surface, Elly has everything a young fairy could wish for. She comes from a well-known and successful fairy family starting with her great, great, great great-grandmother Mattina Knottleweed Eversprightly, the co-author of The Fairy Code, the basic guide to being a fairy. She has great parents and a cute baby sister.

The only problem is that Elly doesn’t want to be a fairy. She would prefer to ride her skateboard than travel to the school with The Flock, disguised as a cloud. She can’t get her wand to work right and she can never remember her spells.

She has been expelled from the best fairy schools and her current school, Mossy Blossom, is her last chance to show everyone that she can be a successful fairy. As the series progresses, Elly attends boarding school over the rainbow and goes undercover in a human school.

As Elly stumbles from one magical disaster to the next, readers learn about what life is really like as a fairy.

Current titles in the series include:

Fairy School Drop-Out

Fairy School Drop-Out: Over the Rainbow

Fairy School Drop-Out: Undercover

A Fairy Story with a Difference

Readers will find a lot to relate to in Elly, a young girl who seems to have everything but struggles with the expectations of others. She is bothered by her parents’ busyness, especially when they seem to give far more attention to her adorable baby sister Kara.

Elly also struggles with the expectations of her family and teachers that she will excel because she comes from a family of successful fairies. In addition to The Fairy Code author, Elly’s family tree also includes a Head-fairy who successfully lobbied for harder exams and longer school days, a famous explorer and a well-known author and journalist. Elly’s mother is a fairy-world renowned inventor.

When Elly becomes friends with her new human neighbour Jess, she is happy to have a friend who accepts her as she is, even though their friendship breaks some major fairy rules.

Elly just wants to be herself. Her adventures help her to show others and herself that she isn’t just a fairy school drop-out.

Lots of Fairy Fun for Girls

While Elly offers a fun alternative to more conventional fairy heroines, the Fairy School Drop-Out stories still contain plenty of fairy fun. Teacher names (Madame Silverwings, Miss Flufferbuff), magic wands, sparkle dust, wings and lots of fairy customs, habits and lessons offer plenty of traditional fairy information to keep young girls happy.

The stories also feature a range of fairy gadgets and Elly’s mother’s inventions. The stories include illustrations of Elly as well as occasional labelled diagrams of fairy items. The books are approximately 145 pages and contain vocabulary suitable for confident independant readers.

Fairy School Drop-Out author Meredith Badger has written many books for 8 – 12 year old girls including in the popular Go Girl, Go Girl Angels and Tweenie Genie series, all published by Hardie Grant Egmont.
