A beautiful story originally published in 1895. It can now be read for free online.

I normally shy away from stories involving angels, fearing a dry plot with heavy moralizing. However, The Garden Behind the Moon by Howard Pyle is the exception.

The Garden Behind the Moon is a beautiful story about a young boy, a moon-calf, and a princess who talks to no one. Both are taken to the secret moon garden where they meet. There they begin to feel the tug of an ultimate, and sacred, destiny.

Watching over all the children, and all the people on Earth, is an angel of compassion. We watch as the angel removes suffering from a mother and infant bound on a slave ship, and ultimately the scene makes a statement against the barbarity slavery. We also see the angel help the young boy on his journey into manhood.

The Garden Behind the Moon reads like a dream. It's wide-eyed childlike innocence left me in a state of enchantment. This is a book that can be easily treasured by all ages.
