Make your own accessories and costumes worn by the characters in the Harry Potter books and movies.

While the last Harry Potter book is out, there is still no end to the Harry Potter craze that has sweeped people off their feet. Crafty folks everywhere are knitting, sewing, and crocheting fantastic sweaters, cloaks, and scarves that you read about in the books and see in the movies.

Scarves

Kids (and adults) still love their Harry Potter scarves. Lion Brand Yarns has its own knitting pattern for scarves for each Hogwarts House: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Slytherin or Ravenclaw. If you prefer to crochet your own Harry Potter scarf, check out the simple instructions on Luvtocraft’s Creations.

Sweaters

If you’re looking to knit an HP uniform sweater, check out OhMyStars. The color schemes for each of Hogwart’s houses is given.

Cloaks

The internet has a lot of pages showing readers how to make a basic hooded cloak. However, if you want to stay true to the Harry Potter saga, you will need to sew a cloak with sleeves. The Padawan’s Guide, an awesome Star Wars website, has instructions on how to adapt a cloak pattern to add on sleeves. The Servants of the Light, a mystery school, also has some great instructions on sewing robes and cloaks with sleeves.

Wizard Hat

Wizard hats are one of the simplest things to make. If you can recall your art classes from elementary school, you may remember making party hats or a princess cap by making a cone shape out of poster board. This is basically how you make the wizard’s hat. Simply cut the poster board into a large circle. Mark the center of the circle and cut a straight line from the edge of the circle to the center. Form the poster board into a cone that will fit the head of the wearer, make your marks, and cut off the excess poster board.

How fancy you make the wizard hat is entirely up to you. Before you staple the poster board into a cone, you can either decorate it with markers or you can glue fabric onto it. When dry, staple into a cone shape.

For a rim, glue a gold or silver ribbon around the outside of the opening.

House Badges

You can make your own house badges from stiff crafting felt. Know your house colors

For simplicity, cut out a simple badge shape from the felt and, in the other house color, cut out the initial for the house, such as an S for Slytherin. Glue the initial onto the badge and pin or sew onto the cloak.
