The Hidden Stairs and the Magic Carpet by Tony Abbott (Scholastic Inc., ISBN 0-590-10839-5) is the first book in The Secrets of Droon series. Written for ages 9 to 12, Tony Abbott takes young chapter readers on an exciting adventure.

The story begins when Eric goes down into the basement to begin cleaning it for his father’s upcoming remodeling project. Joined by his two friends, Julie and Neal, Eric discovers a small closet under the basement steps. When they go into the closet, however, they find themselves standing at the top of another set of stairs; stairs that lead down to another world.

The excitement begins immediately as red-colored monsters, Ninns, on flying lizards begin to attack the three children as they are coming down the magical stairs. Forced to run, the children enter a strange wood where they meet a young princess names Keeah,

Keeah is being hunted by the Ninns and warns the children about the evil Lord Sparr who is trying to find three magical items that will help him gain control over Droon. Eventually captured by Lord Sparr, the three children go on a daring rescue mission to save the princess.
