Martin Bridge is Blazing Ahead in this latest book series written for boys.
Filled with fun, adventure, and mischief, Martin Bridge Blazing Ahead by Jessica Scott Kerrin (Kids Can Press, ISBN 1-55337-961-4) is written for children who are reading chapter books, grades 2-4. The book is filled with illustrations that help children along with their reading as well as keep easily distracted eyes glued to each page.
In Blazing Ahead, it is time for Martin and his friends, all of them Junior Badgers, first overnight camping trip. Martin is excited and eager to earn more badges. However, his friend Alex, a major prankster, has a new prank to pull involving a relish jar filled “classic horror-movie slime.”
Martin is filled with anxiety. He knows that Alex is going to slime him at some point during the overnight camping trip.
Martin and his friends take a nature walk to earn their Junior Hiking Badge. No one gets slimed.
At bedtime, Martin checks his bunk bed covers and under his pillow. Still no slime.
Martin is growing more anxious by the hour. When is Alex going to play the prank?
It is finally the last night of the camping trip. Everyone gets together to roast marshmallows over the campfire. Afterwards, it is time for the boys to earn their Campfire Badge. Stuart plays his recorder. Clark makes a bunk bed out of tape. Martin gives a lesson on Morse code. Lastly, it is Alex’s turn.
Who is Alex going to slime? Will it be Martin or some other hapless Junior Badger?
Back at home, as Martin sits and watches his favorite television hero, Zip Rideout, he spots a cloud of smoke coming from the front yard. Next, his father calls out his name. Martin doesn’t want to get up and miss his favorite show, but he knows that his father needs his help with Laverne.
Laverne is the name of the lawnmower. It’s ancient, ugly, has only three wheels, and never wants to work. Usually, after Martin helps his father work on Laverne, she grudgingly starts up. This day, however, Laverne won’t start. It’s time to take Laverne to the repair shop or, as Martin hopes, get a new lawnmower.
Blazing Ahead is fun adventure story for boys who love to camp, have television or comic book heroes, and who hate the lawn mower.
