Painting flowerpots is the perfect activity for a language arts unit involving Gnomes.

There has been a lot of Gnome talk in the Children's Books section. First, we took a look at a number of Gnome books and discussed the superstitious history of Gnomes. We then looked at The Legend of Landlock, a strategic game involving Gnomes and other mystical creatures. Now we're going to explore the fun craft of painting flowerpots in honor of these elder garden tenders.

To begin, you will need: a clean and dry flowerpot and saucer, PVA glue, paintbrushes, and acrylic paint.

First, mix together 1 part water and 3 parts PVA glue. Brush this glue mixture onto the entire pot and saucer. Store the extra glue mixture in an airtight plastic container. Allow the pot and saucer to dry completely. This seals the clay pot.

Next, use acrylic paint to paint and decorate the pot and saucer. Be imaginative! Paint geometric designs, suns, mushrooms, or even little Gnomes. When you are finished painting, allow the paint to dry completely.

Finally, apply a second coating of the glue mixture over the entire clay pot and saucer. Allow to dry.

You now have a one-of-a-kind for your plants. Enjoy!
