Wondering how you and your child can bring birds to the yard? Try a pinecone birdfeeder.
You have the field guide for local birds. All that is missing now are the birds. The pinecone feeder is a fun project to get kids into the bird watching spirit. All you need are large pinecones, heavy string, peanut butter, and birdseed. To begin, wrap a 12 inch string around the end scales. This will be used to tie the pinecone onto a tree branch. Next, mix two parts seed and one part peanut butter. Spread this mixture onto the pinecone, getting it between the scales. Finally, roll the peanut buttered pinecone in more seeds. Tie the pinecone to a tree branch where birds can perch to eat from it. Hardened (cooked) fat can be used instead of peanut butter. Simply spread the hardened fat onto the pinecone and roll the pinecone in seeds.
