A fun adventure story that is perfect for pirate-lovers and reluctant readers.
Pirates, ships, and the lure of treasure are what make The Coming Storm (Disney Press, ISBN 1-4231-0018-2) the perfect book for pirate-lovers and reluctant readers. Written for all ages, The Coming Storm by Rob Kidd is a paperback book set in large type and can be easily read by most children, third grade and up.
In The Coming Storm we meet a young Jack Sparrow, before he becomes a pirate captain. He is, despite his youth, the same Jack Sparrow that we’ve all come to love in the movies: messy hair, boyish charm, and the ability to get himself into trouble without even looking for it.
The trouble in this adventure is the always-angry Captain Torrents. In a mix-up, Jack Sparrow mistakes Capt. Torrents bag for his own stolen bag and runs off with it only to discover that, instead of regaining his belongings, he has a bag of what looks like junk. Fortunately, his newly found friend, Arabella, recognizes one of the junk items as the scabbard to the legendary Sword of Cortes.
Together, Jack Sparrow and Arabella make plans to leave Tortuga and go off in search of a pirate king and the lost Sword of Cortes.
But, as you can imagine, things don’t go entirely as planned.
The Coming Storm is strictly an adventure story. It’s fast moving and there aren’t any difficult words for children to stumble on. It’s a great read for kids and, since it’s a series, it may be one way for parents, educators, and librarians to get a reluctant reader hooked on reading.
