Here is an exciting adventure book for children age six to ten.
The Dragon of Doom (ISBN 0689857578) is the first book in the Moongobble and Me series. Written by the prolific author of approximately 90 young reader books, Bruce Coville tells an adventure story about a young boy, Edward, and Moongobble the Magician.
In this first book, The Dragon of Doom is written from Edward's perspective. Young Edward has lived all his life in a sleepy little town called Pigbone. All this changes when Moongobble the Magician moves into the cottage on the hill.
You see, Moongobble is not yet a full-fledged magician. He must first prove his worth to Fazwad the Mighty by completing a series of three tasks. Once Moongobble completes the tasks, he will become a member of the Society of Magicians and an official magician.
Moongobble, who has a knack for casting spells that turn everything into cheese, needs Edward's help. He hires Edward for one silver penny a day. Together Edward, Moongobble, a dry-witted talking toad named Urk, and a former knight who has had one too many jousting accidents, must go off and retrieve the Golden Acorns of Alcoona. However, this is no simple task. The Acorns of Alcoona happen to be guarded by a certain dragon, the 'Dragon of Doom.'
The Dragon of Doom is a charming adventure that keeps children glued to the pages. My own two children read this book and were constantly giggling at the snarky comments made by Urk and the silliness of the Rusty Knight. Clearly, any book that is fun and entertaining to read is perfect for children who normally don't like to read.
