Why are toads associated with witches and wizards in children’s fairy tales and stories?

As we saw in , one of the characters was a talking toad. If you've read the story of Tamlin, you will see that Tamlin is transformed into a toad by the Fairy Queen. Again and again, toads turn up in stories and even movies that touch on magic.

The toad has a long history in the realm of superstitions. It is associated with water and water magic. To see a toad is a good omen.

It is also a protector of treasure. To have a toad live outside your home ensures protection, according to folk beliefs.

On the other hand, the toad is also linked to darkness and the Moon. This lunar link is what makes the toad a fabulous companion in any story based on magic, witchcraft, and wizardry.

During the Dark Ages, artists portrayed the toad as being in league with the Devil. They became the evil, horned companion of old women. Like cats and owls (also associated with the Moon), toads were hated and destroyed.

Thankfully, mankind has survived the Dark Ages and has turned to once again befriending toads.
