The lune is an American form of the Japanese haiku. Invented by poet Jack Dollom, the lune was created for children as an easy-to-learn method of poetry writing.
The lune consists of exactly three non-rhyming lines. Line one has three words, line two has five words, and the third line has three words. Unlike the haiku, the lune does not count syllables.
Example:
Sheet white ghost (3 words)
Knocking at my front door. (5 words)
Trick or treat! (3 words)
Lunes can be written for a variety of school topics such as world peace for social studies, colors for art, and shapes for mathematics.
