Children love to play with dough and make snakes, balls, and other simple objects from the dough. When teaching young ones nursery rhymes, the following simple “bread” dough can be used to reinforce what they are learning about each nursery rhyme: Ladybug, Ladybug (ladybug), Three Blind Mice (grey mouse), Humpty Dumpty (Humpty Dumpty on a wall), and Wise Old Owl (owl).
Basic Craft Dough Recipe
4 cups all-purpose flour
1-1/2 cups warm water
1 cup table salt
To make, combine flour and salt. Pour in one cup of water and mix. Slowly pour in the remaining half cup of water until the dough is neither crumbly nor sticky. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for a few minutes.
The dough can be wrapped in plastic wrap, refrigerated, and saved for later use.
After the dough has been made into an object, you will need to bake the item on a baking sheet that has been covered with aluminum foil (easy cleanup and prevents any sticking to the baking sheet). Bake the dough at 325 F for about an hour or until the item is hard (makes a hollow sound when tapped).
TIPS
1. When attaching dough pieces together, brush the pieces with water to make them stick.
2. If the dough starts to get puffy (air bubble) while baking, use a pin to release the air.
3. If an item cracks while baking, fill in the crack with white glue after it has cooled.
4. Paint the item with acrylic paint after it has baked and cooled. Varnish can be used.
