Whether your child is learning about dinosaurs in school or simply has a fascination with them, showing him just how big some dinosaurs were will really blow his mind.

Looking at illustrations of dinosaurs is not enough to help a child understand just how big, or small, a certain dinosaur was. In this outdoor activity, you and your child will head outside and measure out the actual length of different dinosaurs.

Materials Needed

  • Measuring tape
  • Text stakes
  • Rope
  • Dinosaur field guide that lists measurements of dinosaurs

Activity

Head outdoors to a large field or any public open area. Use the field guide to find the length of your child’s favorite dinosaurs. Starting at one end of the field, push the tent stake into the ground. Measure the length of the dinosaur from the stake you just pushed into the ground and mark the length with another stake. Tie a rope from one stake to the other. If you have extra supplies, you and your child can measure out several dinosaurs side by side to visually compare lengths.

This simple activity gives children a more solid grasp on how just big some dinosaurs were. It will also give you and your child time to debate the pros and cons of being a small dinosaur and a large dinosaur.
