Toddlers love going to the playground. They get to climb on the bars with their playmates, swing high on the swings, and zoom down the slide into Mommy’s or Daddy’s arms. Let’s Play! by Deborah Niland (Kane / Miller Book Publishers, ISBN 978-1-933605-47-0) catches all the excitement of a playground adventure.
In Let’s Play!, toddlers meet Red Dog, Blue Cat, and Yellow Bird. These three friends are having the time of their lives. Red Dog likes to hang from the monkey bars. Blue Cat is jumping on a trampoline. Yellow Bird zooms down the slide. Together they try out the swings but Red Dog gets dizzy. He gets off his swing and pushes Blue Cat and Yellow Bird higher and higher. Next they go to the sandbox and together they build a huge castle. Tumbling and playing, laughing and having a day’s worth of fun, they each want to come back to the playground and do it all over again.
Author and illustrator Deborah Niland does an excellent job of showing toddlers all the excitement of visiting a playground. The illustrations leap off each page. There’s jumping, running, laughter, tumbling, swinging, and sliding. Toddlers don’t want to sit still after reading Let’s Play!
For young children who are just learning to read, Let’s Play! gives them large letters and easy words to learn. The illustrations also help children figure out some of the longer words, such as flying, swinging, and sleeping.
Let’s Play! is a great book to share with toddlers before any play date. It gets toddlers excited while, at the same time, shows them how three friends can play nicely together.
Highly recommended for parents and daycare centers!
