Everything is pirates this summer. There are pirate-like belts in the clothing stores, pirate costumes (and it’s not even Halloween yet), and pirate worksheets on the web. So why not a pirate fortuneteller? It’s perfect for telling fortunes and catching those rascally cooties you’ll catch on board a pirate ship.
Speaking of pirate ships, Pirateology: Guidebook and Model Set gives kids a look at what life was like on board a pirate ship. The boxed set even comes with a model ship, the Swiftbuck, that kids can assemble.
If you really want to get into the pirate spirit then find out what it was like to be a pirate’s prisoner in the book You Wouldn’t Want to Be a Pirate’s Prisoner. Learn the price of a prisoner’s stubbornness and how those scurvy pirates will eventually get anyone to fess up.
Need to fill in the time until the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie is released to DVD? Check out the Jack Sparrow series for kids. My son loves these books and insists I read them out to him. Okay, that’s a partial truth. I’m the one who insists on reading the books to him. I can’t get enough of the Jack Sparrow character.
Of course, if all you want to do is curl up with a good ghost story set on the open sea, check out The Mariner’s Curse by John Lunn. This is a haunting tale of a boy on a cruise ship with his mom and step-father. Along comes a ghost and things start getting a bit crazy.
