The Quilting Bee

Young children, as well as long time quilters, will love Gail Gibbons’ picture book on The Quilting Bee.

The Quilting Bee, by Gail Gibbons, is a charming picture book about quilting bees. It teaches young ones about how the quilting bee got its name and the Latin origin of the word quilt. It also shows readers how people in the past wore quilted clothing and made quilts to keep their families warm.

Each page is fully illustrated, showing numerous different quilting blocks and the meanings of each block. The illustrations also teach young ones the truest meaning of quilting bees: love and friendship. All the people are shown working toward a common goal: the "perfect" quilt.

I'm an off and on quilter. While I've never had the pleasure of working with a quilting bee, this book put my own personal appreciation of such groups into simplistic, yet beautiful, words and illustrations. The Quilting Bee is the perfect book for grandparents who quilt (or use to quilt) and for their curious grandchildren.
